Bursting out with an explosion of color centered in the center of the composition, Sam Francis Untitled, c. 1980 is a feast for the eyes. Bright oranges, reds, yellow and blue swirl around the page, emphasized by black. Each color creates a broken rectangle of different sizes, beginning with yellow in the center and ending with large blue, red, and orange rectangles on the outer edges of the card. The splotches of color take on a life of their own as they move across the page, forming a larger part of the composition with the rectangles, but individually creating unique islands of color across the page. They begin to take on personalities and anthropomorphize into shapes. The joy of Sam Francis Untitled, c. 1980 is that the more you look, the more you begin to see behind the abstract colors and shapes. Depth is created where the colors overlap, and the rectangles give the sensation of staring down a corridor that is lit at the end with bright yellow light. The shapes direct our eyes all around the paper, making for a dynamic work full of color.
Created circa 1980, this unique mixed media monotype on paper is stamped with stamped with Sam Francis’s (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) estate stamp on the verso. A unique and original work.
