Sam Francis Monotype Untitled, 1989 is a verifiable world of color. Starting in the center of the work we are stunned by a deep circle of royal purple, ringed by exciting and vibrant red. The red wraps its way around and explodes out of the top, joining the rest of the frenzy. As we look outward, the circle becomes the only point of calm within the composition. The rest is encompassed by dashing lines of burgundy, green, black, and blue. Drops of yellow, here now there, sparkle light across the surface. Underneath, at what looks like the base layer of the color frenzy, are more delicate blues and pinks that have a more watery appearance. The result is a composition full of energy and excitement; one that causes our eyes to dart around attempting to take it all in. The closer you get, the more complex the colors become. From a distance the work is magnificent, and up close it becomes all the more thorough. This is the beauty of Francis' work - it is just as complex and interesting no matter how you look at it, and there are always exciting new details to discover.
Francis was a master at abstraction and he brought all the colors to the table. It is clear from Untitled, 1989 that his color is emotive and capable of portraying an array of emotions through the shades used and application.
