Historical Description

Sam Francis, a prolific Californian artist, was known for several works that echoed the famed Abstract Expressionist movement during the mid-20th century. In Sam Francis Untitled, 1980, four blocks of solid colors anchor the composition. Playful paint spatters dance around the piece, adding movement and repetition. Francis has said “Painting is about the beauty of space and the power of containment.”
Executed in 1980, this Unique Monotype on Handmade Paper is hand signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right.
