In 1956, Time Magazine hailed Sam Francis as ‘the hottest American Painter in Paris’. Truly, this title is fitting given his renown as an Abstract Expressionest painter and his mark on the international art scene. Throughout his works, he maintains his lively splotches of color and his commitment to Jungian analysis and Eastern philosophy.
Certainly, in Untitled, 1989, we can see Francis’ consideration of psychology and consciousness. Bright, geometric shapes are placed amidst vibrant splotches of color throughout. Playful and enigmatic, the shapes and forms appear to dance before the eye. At the center of the work is a blue colored spiral, a magnetic focal point of the work which stands out amongst the surrounding shapes and colors. The white background adds just the right amount of space to let the eyes wonder. In this way, Francis achieves visual harmony.
Created circa 1989 this unique monotype on handmade paper is hand signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right. ‘
