Historical Description

Sam Francis, Untitled, c. 1983, embraces all hues of vibrant colors. Sensationally rich in color, this work is busy with interjections of beautiful textures. The combination of bright colors mixed with the usage of lines embraces contradiction as they embody a kind of harshness to the intricate web work of thinner lines. We see blocks of shapes and forms collide with the purple background that is almost psychedelic. This purple background is highly distinct in that one can see the woodgrain imprinted. What is most apparent visually is the strong wooden impression that slits diagonally across this piece. It breaks up the work into two parts so that it guides the wandering eye effortlessly. The jagged rectangular shapes complement the paint splatters and vice versa. Even though this piece exudes complex details, clarity is one key characteristic that remains consistent throughout. One can truly see Francis’ ability to uplift his audience through visual stimulation.
