Historical Description

Sam Francis Untitled, 1978 features striking deep blue squares underneath energetic sprays of paint splatters. Francis uses warm yellow and red to contrast the cool tones of the blue and green in the composition. Francis often juxtaposes geometric shapes with sharp angles and straight lines with freeform abstract shapes like the long sweeps of paint drops. The combination of the static shapes of the blue squares and the movement of the paint splatters creates an intriguing work that draws the eye of the viewer. Francis is known for his abstracted designs full of bright and saturated colors and a creative exploration of shapes and movement. This dynamic composition is an incredible showcasing of Francis’s artistic vision.

Created in 1978, Sam Francis Untitled is a unique monotype on handmade paper. This work is hand signed by Sam Francis and stamped by the Sam Francis Estate on verso.
