Historical Description

An avid student of Jungian psychology and Japanese aesthetics, Francis’s inspiration can be felt in this work as the juxtaposing lines denote symbols and form that speak to a connection with another self. The choice of blue, red, and yellow colors is simple, but the result of a complex symmetry is astounding. As a physically restricted artist due to ailments, Francis’s works are engaging and lively. This piece is no exception as the color and free form can only truly be appreciated in person.

A unique original monotype, this work is hand-signed by Sam Francis (California, 1923- California, 1994) in pencil in the lower right.
