Historical Description

Lichtenstein Imperfect 58 " x 92 3/8 " is a monumental work from the acclaimed Imperfect Series. Featuring a primary color palette, the grandiose abstraction is not as simple as it seems. In fact, 15 colors were used in 32 runs from 2 Baltic birch woodblocks, and hand-cut reflective silver Mylar collage. Key to this series is Roy Lichtenstein's keen understanding of pattern and composition. Stripes and dots occupy cross-sections, and are juxtaposed with polygonal gaps of turquoise, red, blue, silver, green, and light orange. Staying true to the series, a polka-dotted triangle veers of the edge of the composition's border, undermining the conventional boundaries of the rectangular canvas. A subversive and important effort from one of the ground-breaking pop artist's final series, Imperfect 58 " x 92 3/8 " is delightful experimentation of abstract art that is visually stunning, while playful, and confrontational.

Created in 1988, this color Woodcut, Screenprint and Collage on Archivart 4-Ply Museum Board is hand-signed and dated by Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 – New York, 1997) in pencil in the lower right margin: ‘rf Lichtenstein ‘88’. This work is numbered from the edition of 45 in pencil in the lower right margin; printed and published by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles.
