Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Nude with Blue Hair, 1994; A distressed female stares out at us in Lichtenstein’s classic style of highly simplified color schemes and procedures that mimic commercial printing techniques. In Diane Waldman’s book Roy Lichtenstein, the author states “these women are not heroines but supplicants to the male ego, and Lichtenstein did not invent them; they or their counterparts can be found in the ads or romance comic books of the time (Waldman, 113.)”  With this piece, the artist crops the image in such a way that the emotional quality of the subject matter consumes the work.  The figure’s head appears larger than life and the sense of anguish and worry is echoed in every aspect of the work, from her furrowed brow to her hand resting against her forehead.  Through the artist’s presentation, the girl is rendered helpless for she is offered no means of escape from the viewer’s gaze.  In displaying an image which denies the female figure any quality of dominance or power, Lichtenstein alludes to the social struggles of the 1960’s and the continued fight for female equality.

Created in 1994, this relief print in colors on wove paper is hand-signed and dated by Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 – New York, 1997) in pencil: ‘rf Lichtenstein ‘94’.  Numbered from the edition of 40, aside from the edition of 12 artist's proofs, this work was published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., New York and features their blindstamp along with a workshop number in pencil on the verso.
