Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Conversation, 1990 offers a visually and thematically layered composition that exemplifies the bold, iconic style of the artist. The reflection has dual meaning in the visual context of the Reflections series: it not only refers to the stylized reflective streaks integrated into each image, but it also alludes to the way those reflective streaks obscure certain features in the image and encourage contemplation or reflection about the highlighted parts. The reflective streaks in this image obscure the mouths of the two figures, which highlights their eyes as they look into each other’s face. As a result, the eyes of the figures become the focal point of this work, framing visual communication as a mode of conversation. Lichtenstein reinforces the reflective theme of the series through the glasses on the figure to the right, which has a lens with highlights of its own. Overall, Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Conversation, 1990 is a beautifully complex work both in its visual layering and multifaceted theme.
