Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Lamp, 1997 combines the iconic Ben Day dots and stripes found in the artist’s oeuvre with the organic brushstrokes of traditional painting. This particular print stands out among Lichtenstein’s printed works because each impression consists of hand-painted brushstrokes made by the artist himself. Except for the stylized blue paint strip below the lamp and the brushstroke on the front edge of the table, the color in this work is concentrated in the left half of the composition, creating a chromatic divide that parallels the stylistic divide. The lamp, after which this work is named, occupies the upper right corner of the composition and is rendered in Lichtenstein’s cartooned style. The table beneath the lamp transgresses the divide between the two styles in this work, as its right side features hard edges and outlines while its left side fades into a tangle of brushstrokes. Lichtenstein complicates this visual study of inanimate objects by combining two very different artistic styles, making Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Lamp, 1997 an endlessly intriguing work of art.
