Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Box, 1997 integrates organic brushstrokes with Lichtenstein’s bold cartooned style, distorting spatial orientation through the layering of two different visual effects. The light switch in the upper left corner places the subject in an interior space, but the diagonal stripes on the table top add a sense of flatness to the overall image. Shadows are marked by solid colors or patters, such as the yellow sides on the interior of the box and the stripes on its outside edge, which further distorts the perspectival depth in this work. Despite the contrast of soft brushstrokes and rigid lines, Lichtenstein creates visual harmony and chromatic cohesion in the various shades of green throughout this work. Although Lichtenstein passed away before he had the chance to complete the hand-painted strokes on this work, Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Box, 1997 still offers a complex study of inanimate objects and a visually intriguing composition.

Created in 1997, Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Still Life with Box, 1997 is a color screenprint on honeycomb-core aluminum panel inset in a white wood frame. This work is numbered from the edition of 10.
