Historical Description

A simplified and constructed composition of vertical lines brightens the page in Robert Natkin Composition, 1975. Reminiscent of Natkin’s earlier and famous Apollo series, this work is defined by a simple composition and its’ focus instead on the characteristics of color, light, and texture. The colors are an amalgam of bright and more subdued hues, ranging from sunny yellow, to softer beige tones. The vertical bands of color are all different in width as well, another modifier in this abstract work. A feeling of serenity comes from the order within the work, yet it maintains an immense amount of energy brought on by the sharp colors and beautiful contrasts within the work. By pushing the colors into straight bands, Natkin captures the kinetic energy of the colors – some of the bands are varied in hue, leading to the sense that we are only viewing multiple small slices of different color landscapes.

Though all the colors are different, there are certain larger groupings that carry on multiple times throughout the work which creates a lovely continuity. Blue, yellow, red, and green in varying degrees of vibrancy move in bands through the composition. A colorful abstract work, this piece would stand out in any environment.

Created in 1975, this acrylic on paper is hand signed and dated by Robert Natkin (Chicago, Illinois 1930- Connecticut, 2010) in the lower image right.
