RETNA Untitled Polyptych, 2016 is a spirited work composed of red and blue lines and symbols against a white background, a familiar color scheme in this artist’s work. The dynamic and lively color palette recalls notions of power, stability and change to attract the viewer’s attention. This work represents RETNA’s distinctive style of using elements from various writings — such as Gothic script, Egyptian Hieroglyphics and Arabic calligraphy — to construct his own typographic language, a style that threads consistently through his work from the street art for which he was first recognized and his later works. The patterns of the geometric forms create a distinct linguistic configuration derived from a melting pot of cultural influences and challenge the viewer to interpret and engage with the work. The geometric formations create diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines that cross over one another and are strategically placed to establish a dialogue with the viewer. The geometric lines waver and are more abstract in their placement than the more methodical and orderly placement of elements that define much of his work. This departure from his more typical style attest to a freedom of expression that RETNA has asserted throughout his career. This freedom is further emphasized through the drips of paint that extend from the geometric lines and convey a more spontaneous emotion rather than a controlled expression.
Created in 2016, RETNA Untitled Polyptych, 2016 is a unique and original acrylic work on 6 panels from an originally commissioned work of 36 panels.
