Historical Description

Auguste Renoir Le Chapeau Epinglé (The Hat Secured with a Pin), 1e planche, 1897 is a sweet scene of friendship between two young women. Both don grand hats, piled high with soft fabrics and delicate flowers. Renoir plays with light and dark, casting shadows with their hats but maintaining light on their faces. The grace in their movement is evident, as one girl turns her back to the viewer and rearranges the hat on her friends head, pinning it in place. The other woman’s gentle expression creates a serene moment of calm and friendship that all can feel the warmth of.

Created in 1897, this lithograph printed in sanguine is signed in the stone by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) in the lower right; with the second lithographic signature printed in blue below; from the edition of 50 printed in sanguine, aside from the edition of 100 printed in black, and the edition of 50 printed in bistre; printed by Auguste Clot, Paris; published by Vollard, Paris.
