Historical Description

Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1979 is a gorgeous watercolor work dominated by a deep purple bloom at the top, growing out of warm glowing orange and red strokes of color evocative of spreading wings or opening leaves. There is a languid, gentle movement to the work, as the watercolor moves from the bottom left corner to the upper right, as if floating upwards to a light source. The watercolor takes full possession of the paper, melting into the edges and out of the frame, drawing the viewer in to wonder what’s happening just below what we can see. This gives the work a sublime grandness, suggesting we are seeing only a part of a larger magnificent scene. The dark purple at the top oscillates between seeming as if it’s right before us and receding into the back like far-away night sky. The choice to put the darkest object at the very top hints at Jenkins’s magical ability to create dreamy abstract worlds; what would have easily looked like a convex hill had it been placed at the bottom of the page now evokes something mysterious and otherworldly when placed just at the edge of the top. This beautifully executed unique watercolor perfectly shows off Jenkins’ mastery of the medium.

Created in 1976, Untitled is a watercolor on paper hand-signed by Paul Jenkins (Kansas City 1923 – New York 2012) in the lower center. This is a unique and original work.
