Historical Description

Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1972 is a powerful and energetic piece with a smooth surface created by the fusion of the paints. Using a limited color palette, a large splash of brilliant red generously covers most of the pictorial plane, dominating the limited color palette. An artistic extension of green and yellow paint elegantly blend together and transcend from the highest point of red and continue to the bottom edge. Within the extension is composed of varying drips of paint which appear to have dripped downwards in the opposite direction in which the piece hangs creating a sense of wonderment. A delicate line extends from upper left corner and extends to the edge of the red creating a dialogue between colors and adding to the beauty of the work. Illuminating the work and the intensity of the red, Jenkins deliberately employs two large areas of white on the left and right portion of the piece. Drawing attention to the piece, on the lower portion of the red there is a semitransparent streak of fuchsia highlighted with touches of white. A small window of white penetrates a dark circular area in the lower right edge of the piece creating a negative space and movement.

Created in 1972, Untitled is a watercolor on paper hand-signed and dated by Paul Jenkins (Kansas City 1923 – New York 2012) in ink in the lower left and on verso. This is a unique and original work.
