Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1976 is a sublime and intimate moment of warm red languidly descending to connect with deep sky blue, meeting forces of color in an otherwise serenely white world. As the red swells downward, filled with a heart of dark crimson, and with a streak of bright yellow-navy running through it like a lightning bolt, a monumental cloud of blue rises towards it. A beautiful burst of intersection happens where the two larger-than-life forms intersect. At the left, the sharp edges of each color create a captivating negative space which undulates towards the center of the canvas. At the right, once the red and blue separate again, their edges suddenly becomes softer and less defined, melting into their shared world. At first glance the work appears to be entirely abstract, and yet a wonderful narrative emerges as the viewer follows the journey of the color from left to right, almost like reading a story. Jenkin’s lovely and careful orchestration of color and form here pays off in an incredibly emotive piece. This ethereal and calming painting showcases the artist’s unique ability to create transcendent worlds.
