Historical Description

Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1972 illustrates the artist’s painterly expressionistic language that redefines the relationship between color, light and space. Jenkins utilizes a primary palette of red, blue and yellow that morph and blend together to create a fluid and organic vision that illustrates the unique aesthetic for which the artist is known. The simple and colorful central composition, stark against a pure white background, narrows and the colors soften as the paint “flows” toward the bottom edge of the paper. The absence of brushstrokes illustrates his technique of eschewing the paintbrush completely in favor of using a knife on the surface to guide the colors in a fluid interpretation of the image in mind, governed by both experience and chance. By altering the consistency of the pigments, Jenkins achieves varying levels of translucence and transparency to lend a dynamism and innate harmony to his work. The fluid nature of the colors and how they interact with each other encourages the viewer to engage in an emotional and visual relationship with the piece, uninterrupted by brushstrokes and harsh transitions, an experience that the artist sought. Jenkins’ unique and tactile methods of creating highly expressive art make his art stand out among his fellow abstract expressionists.
