Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1974 is a sensational painting that exemplifies the artist’s innovative method of using an ivory knife rather than a paintbrush, to apply and direct the paint. This captivating trademark technique highlights Jenkins’ experimental spirit and allows him to pull and roll the pigment across the canvas to achieve a flowing appearance and texture. A fluid combination of vivid colors emerges from the emerges from the left edge of the canvas and extends to the lower right, dominating the central picture plane. A brilliant searing slash of orange and reds cuts across the more calming shades of deep teal and azure. Vibrant streaks of green above and below this slash transition the eye from the cooler blues to the hot reds. Subtle white edging between the green and teal on the upper portion of the painting and along the bottom edge enhance this transition and create a mystical relationship between color and the absence of color. Hints of yellow and purple accent the lower right portion and create a sense of movement and life that encourages the viewer to appreciate the entirety of the work. Solid darker colors in the lower portion accentuate areas of transparency and translucence for which Jenkins is celebrated. Jenkins’ skillful and creative application of paint creates a dynamic vision of depth on a smooth one-dimensional surface, playing with the eye’s perception and, ultimately, mesmerizing the viewer.
