Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1963 features a striking composition that swirls in varying shades of translucence, allowing light to intermingle with the artist’s brilliant chromatic palette. Inspired by his earlier work in ceramics, Jenkins consciously translates the luminous effect of glazing into his two-dimensional work through his unique tactile method of painting. Eschewing a paint brush, he pours the paint directly onto the canvas and uses a blade and the surface of the canvas itself to manipulate the flow of the paint to create the image. The result is a glistening smooth surface of discrete and blended pigments with a natural organic flow. The assertive use of bright blue on the left anchors a fusion of darker paints on the right and adds a luminosity for which Jenkins is known. A bold black line curves down from the right top edge of the piece to bottom right corner, bordering the color on the left. Lively, dramatic and bursting with movement, this central composition of color stands out against a pale background. This extraordinary work exemplifies Jenkins’ unique innovative technique and his masterful use of color and transparency to create art that set him apart from other abstract expressionists.
