This work offers a spontaneous and jovial example of the unique artistic style of Paul Cezanne, which is displayed in the artist’s representation of form and use of line. A gestural study of the figure, this work utilizes minimal line work and expresses a mastery of skill and technique.

Created in 1873, this work is a fine dark impression with inky plate edges and evidence of burr in the hat and other darker areas, indicating that this is an earlier lifetime impression.  The work is very well documented in the following catalogues: Cherpin 2, Venturi 1159, and Melot C3. It has full wide margins and is in very fine condition.

By the 1870s, Cezanne's career was well on its way to success and he had developed his own style. On meeting Pissarro and the other Impressionists, Cezanne lightened his palette and produced such famous works as La Maison du Pendu (The Hanged Man's House) in 1873, which was shown only in 1874. This etching is considered to be an allusion to this important painting, which Cezanne painted at Auvers-sur-Oise.

The lights and darks created by the sculptural quality of the frame complements the contrasts in this work.
