Historical Description

Who knew such exuberance could emanate from a simple turned pitcher. Ample expressive elements found in Pablo Picasso ceramic Yan Sun (Yan Soleil), 1963 A.R. 516 flowing stripes and playful dots adorn the ceramic's exterior while emphasizing an elegantly curved shape with informal ease. The red earthenware shows through beneath the graphic engobe decoration radiating warmth and liveliness from within. This sense of life and happiness is further accentuated by the star feature of this piece, a beaming and spirited sun. The fluid shape of the pitcher winds up from a wide body to a thinner neck with a three-leafed clover mouth. The curve of the lip of the pitcher reminds us of the malleable form of the clay. The black decoration winds its way up the neck of the pitcher as well, branching out with the lips and following the contours of the pitcher. Picasso is a master of fitting decoration to the physical form, and Yan Sun (Yan Soleil), 1963 A.R. 516 certainly does not lack this characteristic. The sun itself sits on the largest flat space on the pitcher, an apt decision by Picasso, also one that emphasizes the sun - making it the key decorative element of the pitcher.

Created in 1963, this original Madoura red earthenware clay turned pitcher with engobe decoration (black) engraved by knife is from the edition of 300. This work is inscribed 'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside.
