Historical Description

A delighted fawn smiles out from the center of Pablo Picasso Ceramic Visage no. 12 (Face no. 12), 1963 A.R. 460. The simple face rendered in black is still expressive. The ears perk up attentively, and the smile is so large that is crosses most of the face. Simple strokes delineate the beard and horns, marking the classic features of a fawn.

Spinning out from the central fawn are streaks of blue and gold. The trail out like comet-tails from the smiling fawn. A simple composition, but Picasso truly brings his all to it - enlivening the dish. Picasso carried over themes from his graphic oeuvre into his ceramic body of work. He was fascinated in the mythical figure of the fawn, and explored it in much of his oeuvre.

Created in 1963, this round plate is made of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (blue, yellow, black, white) and enamel, glaze underside. From the edition of 150, this work features the inscribed stamps: 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' on verso.
