Historical Description

Eclectic and powerful strokes of color burst across the surface of Pablo Picasso ceramic Tête (Head), 1956 A.R. 372. Smooth indentations are strategically placed to create a face on this shining plaque. Eyes, brows, a nose, and mouth appear out of the soft white clay. A series of 6 indentations crowns the head of this lovely face. Then, suddenly, bright swaths of color dash across the facing turning the sober portrait into a carnival of color. A swipe of pinky red across the cheek highlights the curve of the face. A dash of deep blue marks the forehead. Two circles of teal combined with twin yellow brush strokes combine to delineate the cheeks. Another line of teal parallels the nose, making it stand out as a central feature of the face. One eye remains a stark white, while the other pupil is colored with a dark blue.

The vibrant steaks of color combined with the shiny finish allow this plaque to brighten up any space. Picasso’s love of care-free and liberated art comes through in this work, and it makes an excellent addition to any collection.
