Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Madoura, 1961 is a color linocut made to commemorate Picasso’s upcoming exhibition on March 16, 1961. A beautiful, aquamarine blue is the foundation of the image. This subtle coloring allows the thin, black lines to stand out. In the center of the image is a smiling man’s face. His eyebrows are etched upwards, as if he had just finished telling a beguiling story. Delicate lines form his set of pursed lips which are set below a straight nose. Judging by this expression, Picasso is perhaps hinting at the playful nature of the exhibition.

Above the face are beautiful cursive letters which spell “Madoura.” Below the title is a cursive inscription reading “81 Rue d”Antibes Cannes Cannes-AM.” These letters possibly reveal the beginnings of typographic design. Truly, this linocut is not only an art piece but also a moment in history.

Created in 1961, this color linocut with an Arches watermark is is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left margin, published by Galerie Madoura and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris.
