Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Peintre devant son Chevalet (Painter in Front of His Easel), 1927 is a delicate work with a sketch-like quality. On the left side of the composition is a nude man holding a palette and a paintbrush. He is illustrating his model who sits with her upper body exposed on a stool on the right side of the composition. Their gazes intersect in the center of the composition where the painter’s canvas lays, emphasizing the significance of the artist’s creation.  In this work, Picasso captures the essence of the romance of the studio; the painter and his model are entranced by the intimacy of the moment and the artist’s creative genius. The wispy rendering of the figures and their domain reflects the intimacy that they are experiencing and tempts the viewer to take part in it.

Created in 1927, this etching is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso  (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pen and brown ink in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 99 in pen and brown ink in the lower left margin.
