Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Paysage (Landscape), 1953 fortifies the ultimate moody expression that Picasso is prominently known for. Obscure, dark, and morose are words that captivate the mood of this work. There is a heavy but sporadically handed use of knife strokes that outline the lonely and somber looking home, while the outline of grass and vegetation steadies the perspective of the wandering eye. This work is sensational because it not only showcases Picasso’s ability to create seismic chaos but he is able to artfully control and balance it. He does so effectively by enclosing the house in a circular architectural frame using only three colors—black, blue, and white. Decorated in streaks of glazed rays, the outer rim draws attention to the differences in texture. However, the true winner of this work lies in the depiction of clouds. We are immediately entranced by the clouds that materialize behind the house and engulf the entire premise. Very painterly and expressive, what we experience here is an immense gravitational pull that brings us to have an admiration for Picasso’s work. Truly, this stunning piece is any Picasso admirer’s dream to possess.

Created in 1953, Pablo Picasso Paysage (Landscape) is a white earthenware clay, engobe and white enamel decoration under partial brushed glaze (black, blue, white). Numbered from an edition of 200, this work is stamped with the Madoura Plein Feu and Edition Picasso pottery stamps on verso.
