Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Trois Femmes Nues (Three Nude Women), 1965, depicts three women, arranged dynamically across the paper. Their bodies exude an energetic quality that is made up of jagged and sporadic lines. There is exquisiteness to the simplicity of this etching that ultimately brings out the playfulness of Picasso. The woman on the left cups her turned head in her hands. The profile of her face is dominated by a bold asterisk-like eye. The viewer’s attention is immediately drawn to it, the darkest spot on the page. One can see the variant strokes of line work expressively splayed across; where the image drawn gives light to how lively the three women are depicted. Everywhere you look, the contours of the nude women guide our eye towards each other. The arm of the woman in the middle leads to the asterisk-like eye and the elbow of the female on the right directs our attention to the center head. Pablo Picasso, a master of multiple disciplines, exemplifies his amazing skills through simple, energetic, and lively drypoint etching.

Created in 1965, this drypoint etching is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left.
