Historical Description

A curious bird peaks over its shoulder in Pablo Picasso Ceramic Oiseau no. 93 (Bird No. 93), 1963 A.R. 486. Picasso has used darker engobe to delineate the feathers on the body of the bird. Ringing the neck are delicate feathers that we can imagine puff out from the bird. Likewise, the delicate and spindly legs are of the bird are covered in soft white feathers ending in clawed feet.

Picasso was a master at fitting the form of the ceramic with its decoration, and in this case he has done it again. The body of the bird is gently placed in the central divot. The plate cradles our bird as its wings and feet spread out across the broad rim.

Created in 1963, this Madoura white earthenware clay round plate with engobe decoration (white, black) under partial brushed glaze with black patina is inscribed on the underside : ‘No 93,’ ‘EDITION PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA’ and is numbered from the edition of 200 on the underside.
