A ivory, white bird perches on deep green foliage in Pablo Picasso Ceramic Oiseau No. 83 (Bird No. 83), 1962 A.R. 483. The bird looks caught unaware by the viewer, and its wide eye is trained on us, surveying the intruder to the scene. With such simplicity of design and movement, Picasso is able to bring the bird to life. It's white, rounded body with tapering feathers enlivens the plate. Its delicate beak has added realism with the thin black, linear detail. Stark contrast between the regal bird and the onyx background highlights it's bright feathers.

The bird balances delicately on thin, twig-like legs, giving the fluffy body a lightweight appearance. This is only enhanced by the cloudy, swirling way that Picasso has painted the  body of the bird. Picasso breathes life into his work through simple yet careful painterly strokes. The bird lives within the plate, yet has a personality to it, that allows us to imagine it beyond this moment in time. Picasso's art has a staying power, making it new and exciting to come back to time and time again.

Created in 1963, this madoura ceramic white earthenware clay plate with decoration in engobe (green, white, black) and enamel under partial brushed glaze, black patina is inscribed on the bottom "EDITION PICASSO" and "MADOURA". Numbered from the edition of 200.
