Historical Description

The elegant profile of a curious goat emerges against a starry background in the striking Pablo Picasso ceramic Goat, 1952 A.R. 151. The raised surface of this large-scale dish delineates the outline of the goat's face. The face is then colored, darker on the neck, and lighter white where the stars shine their light upon the goat.  The yellow star, brightest, is right above the goat as it looks up into the sky. The white outline present around all of the stars gives a sense that they are gleaming against the darker grey of the sky. A strong sense of contrast is apparent in this work, as white, black, and blue hues complement each other, causing the image of the goat to clearly stand out. Picasso's skill at capturing the expression of his subject shines through, even in his animal subjects, as we sense a mischievous twinkle in this goat's wide open eye.

Picasso depicted goats in many different mediums and always with extreme care. He clearly had a personal connection with the animal in particular, as he had a pet goat himself which he named Esmeralda.

Created in 1952, this original white earthenware clay round/square dish with decoration in engobes (ivory, blue, yellow, black) under partial brushed glaze with patinated ground is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'Madoura Plein Feu' and 'Empreinte Originale de Picasso' stamps on the reverse.
