Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Dans l’Atelier (In the workshop), 1963 presents two nude mischievous figures posing. Picasso brings forth an animated spirit in such a simple pictorial frame. Our eye holds onto the intense black that outlines the shape of the woman on the left. The face is completely blurred, heightening the ambiguity of her gender. We can see the curves that hug her body in impulsive strokes that seem to extend beyond the bodily framework. Difficult to see, there seems to be a third figure sitting down in front of the easel. These two bodies are fused into one—an extension of one another. What is interesting about the third figure to the right is the stark contrast and simplicity of the lines that make up his body. The sitter sits with his arms defiantly crossed and eyes x-ed out, creating an immediate attention to him. The smirk on his face signifies the feeling of gratification and we, as the audience, feel connected to this contentment.

Created in 1963, Pablo Picasso Dans l’Atelier (In the workshop), 1963 is an etching on Rives paper hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
