Historical Description

The dark, elegant profile of a curious goat emerges against a starry background in the striking Pablo Picasso Tete de chevre de profil (Goats head in Profile) Unique color Variant, 1952, A.R. 154. The goats head is tilted very fast - it's up to the twinkling stars that gleam above. The raised surface of this large-scale dish delineates the outline of the face - a characteristic that is best exemplified by this rare color variant in which the face is monotonous and devoid of painterly coloring. The goat is depicted in geometric lines and shapes, yet looks very lifelike. Picasso's skill at capturing the expression of his subject shines through, even in his animal subjects, we have a mischievous twinkle in this goat's eye. The dark background is contrasted with the bright yellows, vibrant greens, and brilliant blues that dot the composition.
