Historical Description

In Pablo Picasso ceramic Perched Black Owl (Hibou Noir Perche), 1957 A.R. 398, a cartoonish and bold owl shows off his feathers while accentuating the graceful beauty of the circular dish. Each plume curves with the lines of the plate decorating the rim with a striking contrasting pattern of organic lines and playful dots. The detail has been engraved into the engobe black body, carving out the facial features, the claws, and the feathers on the body. Picasso works with the wide rim and smaller center divot of the dish by placing the entire body of the owl into the center, and letting the wings, head, and tail expand to fill the rim. We admire his impressive wingspan while enjoying the intricate details for all their beauty. Hibou Noir Perche (Perched Black Owl) A.R. 398, 1957 uses one of the simple decorative schemes, making use of the red earthenware clay as the back drop to the dark owl. This use of red and black hearkens back to Picasso's interest in Ancient Greek pottery, which was dominated by this color scheme.

Created in 1957, this turned round dish of red earthenware clay, with engobe decoration in black, knife engraved decoration, and decorated back is from the numbered edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside, along with the handwritten inscription 'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' in black.
