Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Picador et Taureau (Picador and Bull), 1959 is a dynamic artwork with flowing lines and a palette of brown, black, beige and mauve. A favorite scene of the Spanish artist, the viewer bears witness to a dramatic bullfight. The subjects of this composition are the Picador, the horse,  and the bull. Picasso abstracts these figures to bold and graphic black lines; their forms simplified yet still recognizable. The neutral palette showcases Picasso's distinct style of building up tonal range with the use of flat, graphic shapes of color. To create this composition, Picasso utilized a relief printmaking technique called "reduction" in which the artist gradually cuts away from a single block, printing each color in layers. As Picasso progressively cut away from the linoleum block, he builds an environment which becomes fuller and fuller with detail, atmosphere, and life.

Created in 1959, Pablo Picasso Picador et Taureau (Picador and Bull), 1959 is a color linocut  printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Louise Leiris, Paris. Hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin, this work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
