Historical Description

Highlighted in light colors, an abstractly rendered woman curls up in a chair in Pablo Picasso Femme dans un fauteuil et guitarist (Woman in a Chair and Guitarist), 1959. Long, curving lines denote her flowing hair and sensuous limbs. Across from her, legs crossed, sits a man in a hat. He is drawn in darker colors, but the front of his legs is lit – almost as if the woman is exerting a tangible glow. He cradles a guitar in his hands and plays sweet music to the woman sitting beside him. None of the characters in this linocut are very detailed by Picasso, but each compels the viewer to lean in and learn more about what is unfolding in front of them.

Created in 1959, Femme dans un fauteuil et guitarist (Woman in a Chair and Guitarist) is a color linocut on Arches wove paper. Published by Arnéra, France, this work is one of two proof impressions aside from the numbered edition of 50.
