Historical Description

Utilizing simple, jagged lines and a strong sense of texture, Picasso creates an intriguing face in Pablo Picasso ceramic Visage de face (Full-face Face), 1963 A.R. 508. He strips this full-face face down to the basic elements: a mouth, nose, and eyes. The nose consists of two parallel vertical lines with small outcroppings to the left and right for the nostrils. The eyes are tiny circles and the mouth is a slightly upturned horizontal line. There is a gentle slope to the plate, and the face sits in the lowest part. Diagonal lines slash across Picasso ceramic Full-face Face, encouraging us to use our imaginations to create an identity for these marks, whether they are facial hair or battle scars. All the markings look rough, as if they have been gouged out of the already baked clay. Given the lack of glaze, the texture from these marks brings an intensity to the piece. Picasso has almost deconstructed a face here - and yet it still smiles playfully out at the viewer, full of just enough life that Picasso has made us believe in the livelihood of the face. Picasso utilizes simplicity like none other to create works full of feeling, but devoid of intense detail.
