Historical Description

Pablo Picasso ceramic Vase au décor pastel (Vase with Pastel Decoration), 1953 A.R. 190 consists of warm colors and a simple decorative scheme. Front and center on the largest part of the vase is a small sun-face. Framed by a blue box, which is in turn framed by white and yellow lines, the sun is made of yellow, green, and black pastels. The red clay has a more textured look and it appears rough to the touch. When the pastels are applied, they are patchy and perfect for showing and highlighting the texture of the pottery.

Picasso drew much inspiration from the Ancient Greek tradition of pottery making in terms of his color schemes and subject matter – often choosing to depict fauns and the like. This particular vase utilizes the red color of clay as the canvas for the decoration – similar to periods in the Attic tradition. This borrowing is one aspect that makes Picasso’s ceramics so widely loved. Picasso also had the innate ability to infuse charm and personality into every ceramic that he made – most certainly including Picasso ceramic Vase with Pastel Decoration, 1953 A.R 190.
