Pablo Picasso Tarasque, 1954

A wonderful combination of Picasso’s love for ceramic medium and his love for the bull, Tarasque is at once painterly and playful. The pitcher is distinctively shaped, unique in its rendition of a bull. The typically fearsome animal appears unexpectedly silly, its eyes opened wide all whilst bearing a wide set of white teeth on a flattened face. The subdued colors of brown, black and white combine beautifully. Picasso’s skills as a painter are shown in the ways the colors intertwine and blend gently. Above all, this work is emblematic of Picasso’s artistic identity.

Created in 1954, this Madoura white earthenware clay turned pitcher with decoration in engobes (red, black, white, grey patina), under partial brushed glaze is inscribed in black ‘EDITION PICASSO’ and stamped with ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ and ‘Edition Picasso’ pottery stamps on verso and numbered from the edition of 50.
