Pablo Picasso Spanish Dish, 1957
In a rather unusual style for Picasso, bulls' heads are displayed along the curvature of the dish with a singular eye in the center. In what is almost a Southwestern style of representation, the bulls' horns are long and embellished with menacing, x carrying circles surrounding them. The eye in the center is what captures you however as the space between it and the bulls is simply vacant, possibly implying something otherworldly. Meanwhile the back of the plate displays symmetrical symbols, that one can imagine are Picasso's own form of abstract language.
Created in 1957, this is an original turned dish of red earthenware clay with glaze decoration and knife engraved with deportations on the back From the edition of 100, this work features the inscribed stamps 'Madoura Plein Feu' and 'Edition Picasso' on the bottom.
