Historical Description

Utilizing simple, clean-cut lines, Pablo Picasso ceramic Profil de Jacqueline (Jacqueline’s Profile), 1956 A.R. 308 is an iconic image of his second wife Jacqueline. She was such an artistic inspiration of Picasso's that more images exist of her than of any of his other muses. Picasso’s geometric portrayal of Jacqueline in profile appears harsh yet strikingly beautiful as she gazes forward, eyes lidded, with a tranquil and adoring expression on her face. The viewer can almost imagine that this loving look was one reserved for Picasso alone. Picasso truly was a master of all mediums. A face outlined from clay could easily be messy, but Profil de Jacqueline appears from the red clay with delicate, thin pieces of clay, which serve to make her look unendingly elegant. The leaf that is tucked behind her ear sends its stem down her cheek bone, elongating and highlighting her face. The outlines of Jacqueline’s profile are slightly raised adding a sense of depth to the piece. They create delicate shadows that emphasize the sweet profile. Picasso perfectly accentuates the geometric form of Jacqueline’s exquisite face by placing her in the center of the dish, contrasting the angular curves of her profile against the gentle curve of the ceramic dish.

Created in 1956, this Madoura round/square dish of red earthenware clay is numbered from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ and ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ pottery stamps on the reverse.
