We see a simple face, framed with geometric, concentric lines that radiate into varying segments surrounding the plate. In these segments, we observe the letters, VALLAURIS, the city in France where Picasso created most (if not all) of his ceramics; along the lower edge is the date (in mirror image) of when this work was created. Most interesting in the coloration is the subtle tonalities of teal and blue/green that shine forth from just beneath the black engraving against the surface of the plate. Both the sleek texture and the contrasting color add a depth and range to this humble work unlike any other Picasso ceramic.
Created in 1953, this ceramic plate is made of white earthenware clay and engraved with oxidized paraffin under white enamel. From the total edition of 400, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
