On a square plaque shines a small solar body, Pablo Picasso ceramic Petite face solaire (Little Solar Face), 1968. The plaque holds more weight on the left side, as the solar face is slightly off center. Engraved lines create a frame of sorts, and these are also double on the right side of the plaque. Functioning as a frame, or perhaps as a window, we look through to see a sun on the other side. It beams out light from its face, and little rays dot the circumference. Half of the face is bathed in light, marked by the red clay, and the other half is colored by black engobe. On this side, the facial features stand out brilliantly against the deep black. The earthy red color looks beautiful with the black, and creates an overall pleasing composition with sunny subject matter. The engraving adds depth to the plaque, and also allows for the play of light over the pits and valleys in the face, making for a complex ceramic work. It is sure to be a wonderful edition to any collection.

Created in 1968, this Madoura square plaque of red earthenware clay printed with black engobe pad is stamped with the ‘EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA PLEIN FEU’ pottery stamps on the underside; numbered from the edition of 200 on the underside.
