Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Paysage (Landscape), 1953 A.R. 208 is a thoughtful work that depicts what is presumably a French village underneath a night sky. This work differs greatly from the other works of Picasso; the rendering of this ceramic is quite methodical and controlled and its color diverges from the warm, earthy tones prevalent in much of the artist’s other ceramic work. He notes, “Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” This may indicate that the artist’s use of color is a direct line to the thoughts and emotions of Picasso during the time of this work’s making. Pablo Picasso Paysage (Landscape), 1953 A.R. 208 is ruminative, beautiful, and brings a sense of peace to the viewer. The engraving in the work brings a unique dimensionality and tactility to the work that leaves the impression of the artist’s hand with them as well. The attention to detail in this work is reminiscent of a children’s drawing, giving the piece a nostalgic sensibility. Though simple and minimalistic, the mark-making of this ceramic is extremely mature and deeply considered.  Its attractive, fresh presence, intense contrast and distinction from the rest of Picasso’s work make this piece even more compelling and delightful.

Created in 1953, Pablo Picasso Paysage (Landscape) A.R. 208 is an earthenware clay plate, painted in blue, green, brown, white and black. Numbered from the edition of 200, this work is stamped with the ‘MADOURA  PLEIN FEU’ and ‘EDITION PICASSO’ pottery stamps on the reverse.
