Pablo Picasso Madoura Plate, Face, 1968-1969

A whimsical portrait in vivid colors, this work appeals to our response to color, texture, depth and space. There is a wonderful interplay between line and circle, as these lines and circular forms converge to create a charming face with round green eyes and an X-shaped mask across the center. Areas of the piece have a glossy clear glaze that hi-lights the bright colors and deep, rich earth tones.

Created in 1968-1969, this original square plaque of red earthenware clay, engobe ground, engraving enhanced with oxides (white, 2 greens, blue) under partial brushed glaze is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
