Pablo Picasso Head with Mask, 1956

Utilizing the simplistic design motifs frequently found in his ceramics, Picasso creates an exquisite plate that plays with our notion of what is functional and what is art. A mysterious masked face gazes out at the viewer with a mischievous and playful smile. While retaining an element of mystery, the black oval mask covering its eyes and nose complements the composition by creating interesting geometrical shapes. Created in 1956, this Madoura round plate of white earthenware clay, white enamel, glaze, oxide ivory, black is incised on the verso and numbered from the edition of 200. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse
