Pablo Picasso Hands with Fish, 1953

The fish, central to this marvelous work, sets a colorful and contrasting background to the hands that grasp it from either end. The delicate, hand-applied engobe designs accentuate the work's texture and breathe life and movement into the piece when viewed under various angles of light. This is a delicate and whimsical work; the concave nature of its medium serves to complement the writhing fish beneath the steady grasp of the hands.

Created in 1953, this original round dish of red earthenware clay with deep engraving painted in engobes (russet, green, blue, ivory, black) under partial brushed glaze is from the edition of 250. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
