Pablo Picasso Full-face Face, 1960
Animated lines convey an unusual yet striking face in this marvelous work. Smiling out at us with one eye seemingly closed, we gather the impression that this full-face face is winking at us. Minimal relief with lines in exquisite brown and teal hues define the eyes, nose, and mouth of this smiling face, as Picasso once again exemplifies his talent at conveying human expression. Contrasting smooth surface areas with raised patches of relief, Picasso achieves a rich sense of texture in this remarkable work.
Created in 1960, this round cupel of white earthenware clay with engraving accentuated with oxidized paraffin (ivory, brown, green, bronze-colored black) in a glaze bath with a black enamel underside is from the edition of 100. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
