Pablo Picasso Face No. 54, 1963
This beautifully abstract, decorative piece is whimsical and geometrical at the same time. Its bright, lively colors radiate from the central Face which anchors the overall composition with his surprised, engaged expression. It is a simplified face, made of simple, white strokes against a dark background allowing the rest of the colors to pop and catch our eye. Alternating elements of lapis lazuli blue, light pink lines, and curved white and black elements make way for a slightly optical and almost southwestern feel to this particular ceramic. The underside is basked in a soft, crème white that seems to radiate a light halo around the entire work.
Created in 1963, this Madoura plate is crafted of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes and enamel under partial brushed glaze and black patina. It has a handwritten inscription on the underside of the plate, 'No. 54 | EDITION PICASSO | 143/150 | MADOURA'; out of the total edition of 150 works produced.
